In 2024, the Watang-Rizhao Railway, a key heavy-load energy channel for the transport of coal from Shanxi, achieved a freight volume of 98.54 million tons. Since its opening on December 30, 2014, the railway has accumulated a total freight volume of 603.54 million tons over the past decade, playing a vital role in ensuring energy security and keeping homes lit across the nation.

The Watang-Rizhao Railway spans the three provinces of Shanxi, Henan and Shandong, connecting with seven major rail lines, including the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway and Beijing–Shanghai High Speed Railway. It is China's first 30-ton axle load coal transport corridor built in a single phase, providing a crucial link for coal transport to the sea.

From the outset, the Watang-Rizhao Railway has been tasked with the heavy responsibility of "transporting western coal to the east." CR-Taiyuan has fully implemented the strategic directives of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council on adjusting transportation structure and reducing national logistics costs. It has deepened cooperation between the railway and enterprises, strengthened freight source organization, and built a total of eight dedicated lines, including the Zhongxing-Baode Railway Dedicated Line at the Watang Railway Station, which has established a cargo handling capacity of 60 million tons for the Watang-Rizhao Railway.
